Above freezing temperatures and rain have contributed to improved road conditions in Fredericksburg, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). However, drivers are advised to remain cautious while traveling tonight and into tomorrow.
Most primary roads, including Interstate 95 and high-volume secondary roads in the Fredericksburg area, are reported to be clear. Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets show varying conditions, with some areas having bare pavement visible and others experiencing partial snow coverage.
In the Northern Neck region, primary roads are generally clear except in King George County where some major roads are still in minor condition. Meanwhile, in the Middle Peninsula area, all roads are clear with exceptions noted in King William and Essex counties where secondary roads remain in minor condition.
VDOT crews will continue their work overnight focusing on plowing and treating low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets.
Regarding snow removal practices, VDOT explains that plow operators push snow off roadways in smooth passes. This often results in snow accumulating in gutters and on road shoulders, occasionally blocking driveways. Unfortunately, this method is necessary to make as many roads passable as quickly as possible.
