The Route 695 (Hamilton Road) bridge over the South Anna River in Louisa County has been closed to traffic following a regular inspection that revealed ongoing deterioration of several supporting beams. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced the closure today, citing safety concerns.

Built in 1929, the steel beam and timber deck bridge had previously been limited to a three-ton weight capacity. In light of the closure, drivers are advised to use alternative routes while VDOT sets up a detour that bypasses all structures with reduced weight limits.

Further analysis by VDOT’s bridge engineers is needed to determine if repairs can be made and whether the bridge can be reopened. According to data from 2019, approximately 58 vehicles used the bridge daily.

VDOT emphasizes its commitment to safety through an extensive bridge inspection program that exceeds federal standards. More information about this program is available on their website under "Bridges in Virginia."

Updates from the Culpeper District can be found on their Facebook page and X (Twitter) account @VaDOTCulp. For inquiries or reports of hazardous road conditions, individuals should contact VDOT’s Customer Service Center via my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623). Current traffic conditions and other travel information are accessible on the 511Virginia website, through the VDOT 511 mobile app, or by dialing 511 within Virginia.
