The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has advised residents in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and parts of the Middle Peninsula to delay travel until road conditions improve. Although snowfall is decreasing, many secondary roads in residential areas remain covered with snow. VDOT recommends postponing trips until later on Wednesday when temperatures are expected to rise above freezing and precipitation turns to rain.

Overnight, VDOT crews concentrated their efforts on treating and plowing Interstate 95, primary roads, and high-volume secondary roads to maintain passable travel lanes during the snowfall. Today, they will focus on enhancing road shoulders, turn lanes, crossovers on major routes, and addressing low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets.

In the Fredericksburg area, Interstate 95 is in minor condition with three travel lanes open but some isolated patches of snow. Primary roads and high-volume secondary roads show bare pavement in some areas but partial snow coverage remains on others. Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets are in moderate to severe condition with partial or full snow coverage.

For the Northern Neck region, primary roads in King George and Lancaster counties are reported to be in minor condition while those in Richmond, Northumberland, and Westmoreland counties are in moderate condition. Secondary roads across the Northern Neck are mostly moderate except for Westmoreland where they face severe conditions.

In the Middle Peninsula area, primary roads in Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex counties have been cleared. King William County's primary roads are experiencing minor conditions whereas Essex and King & Queen counties report moderate conditions. Secondary roads range from clear in Mathews to severe conditions found particularly in Essex County.

Residents can access current road conditions via 511Virginia as weather may vary throughout the state. It is advised to check road status along your entire route before embarking on a trip.

VDOT assures that crews will continue working around-the-clock shifts until all state-maintained roads are plowed, treated if necessary, making them safe for travel.

A "passable" road condition means an 8-10 foot wide path has been cleared for emergency vehicle access; however these paths might still be snow-packed without visible bare pavement or full curb-to-curb clearance. Crews also sand hillsides curves intersections aiding traction.

For residents shoveling driveways: VDOT advises waiting until after plows have passed before clearing driveways by pushing accumulated snow towards right side facing roadway minimizing repeated work due additional street clearance activities occurring subsequently.
