Construction work on enhancing the I-264 west off-ramp at Ballentine Boulevard in Norfolk commenced this month, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve operations at the intersection comprising interstate ramps, a city street, and a light rail crossing.

Awarded to Branscome, Inc. in February 2025, the project holds a budget of $1.9 million. Planned improvements include the expansion of the existing westbound off-ramp from I-264, adding two right-turn lanes and a left-turn lane onto Ballentine Boulevard. Additionally, modifications to signaling, drainage upgrades, and the construction of a raised median island are part of the project to enhance turning movements.

Motorists can anticipate shoulder, lane, and ramp closures and traffic shifts on the ramp during construction. Completion is projected for early 2026, although the timeline may change due to weather conditions or scheduling adjustments.

VDOT advises drivers to use their free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the 511-integrated Waze GPS app, for the latest road conditions. VDOT's 511Virginia.org website and mobile app provide updates on construction, traffic incidents, congestion, and offer access to traffic cameras and weather-related information.
