The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin full overnight closures of North Armistead Avenue as construction of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment progresses. These closures are scheduled to commence on April 14 and will occur from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.

During the closures, westbound traffic on North Armistead Avenue will be redirected via signed detours to West Pembroke Avenue and LaSalle Avenue. Eastbound travelers will follow detours along LaSalle Avenue to East Mercury Boulevard and Rip Rap Road or to West Pembroke Avenue. All businesses in the area will remain accessible.

The closures will allow for repairs on the I-64 bridge over North Armistead Avenue and are expected to last through early summer. Motorists are advised to find alternate routes to avoid the work area and to proceed with caution near work zones, adhering to posted speed limits and digital signs.

VDOT recommends using its 511 Virginia traffic tools or the Waze GPS app for the latest travel conditions. The 511Virginia.org website and app provide updates on construction, traffic, and weather-related impacts.

The HREL Newport News Segment Project spans approximately 11.5 miles on I-64, extending from just east of LaSalle Avenue in Hampton to west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. The project involves converting existing HOV lanes and one general-purpose lane into Express Lanes.

Ultimately, the HREL Newport News Segment will integrate into a 45-mile high-occupancy toll Express Lanes network on I-64, encompassing Newport News to the I-264/I-664 interchange in Chesapeake. The Express Lanes are part of a long-term strategy to manage congestion and enhance travel options in the region. For additional information and updates, visit 64expresslanes.org.
