Snow and ice are expected to impact central Virginia starting Tuesday morning, continuing into Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of the Piedmont region through Wednesday afternoon.
The forecast predicts 7 to 9 inches of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, leading to hazardous driving conditions. In response, VDOT crews are brining Interstate 64 and Interstate 66 today and positioning teams across the area to work in 12-hour shifts. Drivers are advised to be cautious around heavy equipment pretreating the roadways and provide them with sufficient space.
Residents are encouraged to make final preparations today and plan travel around the storm. Once snowfall begins, staying off the roads will allow crews to clear snow and treat roadways as necessary.
Safety and travel resources emphasize planning travel ahead of time when winter weather arrives. Residents should check road conditions, prepare an emergency car kit, follow forecasts and announcements, and limit travel based on conditions.
Before traveling, motorists can visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov, call 511 or use the 511 Virginia mobile app for current information on road and traffic conditions. It is important to check conditions along the entire travel route as they may vary in different regions of the state.
