The reconstruction of Route 622, also known as Whiting Road, across the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Fauquier County has been completed and is now open to traffic. This project has been a significant focus on Fauquier County’s Secondary Six-Year Plan for many years.
The crossing covers two railroad tracks and is situated about half a mile south of Route 55, also known as John Marshall Highway, just east of Marshall. Whiting Road serves as a new north-south connector between Route 55 and U.S. 17 (Winchester Road), which aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. Previously, Whiting Road ended at either side of the train tracks before this construction.
In collaboration with Norfolk Southern, contractors from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and state forces have installed new pavement at the crossing's approaches, constructed a stormwater management pond, and added new roadway signage and pavement markings. The railroad company provided new crossing infrastructure, including signals and gate arms. A section approximately half a mile long west of the railroad crossing remains privately maintained until it is accepted into the state highway system.
VDOT advises that when approaching a railroad crossing, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should never bypass flashing lights or maneuver around lowered gates. It is important to wait until lights stop flashing and gates are fully raised before proceeding through the crossing. For more rail safety resources, visit vapassengerrailauthority.org/railsafety.
