Drivers in Botetourt County should prepare for upcoming changes in the work zone at Route 220 and International Parkway. These adjustments are part of an ongoing road construction project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. The changes, dependent on weather conditions, are expected to be implemented by late January.
The long-term left lane closures on both northbound and southbound Route 220 will be lifted. However, temporary lane closures may still occur during daytime hours in both directions.
Two new crossovers will open to facilitate right turns and U-turns from side streets. Traffic from International Parkway that currently uses Route 673 (Greenfield Street) and Route 670 (Trinity Road) to access northbound Route 220 will have a new crossover available. Similarly, Ashley Plantation traffic will gain a closer crossover for making U-turns near the intersection.
This project includes constructing a restricted crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection designed to enhance safety and efficiency at the junction. Drivers who previously turned left from Ashley Way and International Parkway onto Route 220 will now turn right before making U-turns.
