The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is set to commence a bridge rehabilitation project on Route 14 over North End Branch in Mathews County beginning Monday, April 14. This project, aimed at refurbishing the 76-year-old structure situated between Plantation Road and Bookers Lane, comes with a budget of $3.5 million.
The main focus of the rehabilitation is replacing the bridge superstructure to enhance safety and extend its service life. The superstructure is a crucial component that supports the weight of vehicle traffic. As construction proceeds, the speed limit on Route 14 over North End Branch will be lowered from 55 mph to 35 mph. Temporary traffic signals will also be installed to manage one-way traffic flow through the work zone.
VDOT will adjust the speed limit between the project site and another nearby project at Route 3/Route 14 due to their proximity, reducing it from 55 mph to 45 mph. This stretch measures less than a mile.
Weather permitting, the temporary signals are scheduled to begin flashing on Tuesday, April 22, with full color operation starting Friday, April 25. These signals will prioritize emergency service vehicles, allowing them swift passage through the area. Furthermore, starting Monday, April 28, there will be a vehicle width restriction of 10 feet within the work zone to improve safety.
The reduced speed limit, temporary traffic signals, and width restriction are expected to remain until the project's completion in June 2026. Travelers on Route 14 should anticipate delays throughout the duration of the project. To keep the public informed, message boards will be installed starting April 8, and updates will be available online on the project's dedicated page at vdot.virginia.gov.
