The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the closure of Route 634, also known as Mt. Elba Road, in King and Queen County due to damage from severe weather. The adverse conditions affected a large pipe and pavement on the road.

According to VDOT, the closure will last for at least 45 days. This period is necessary for crews to replace the damaged culvert and restore the roadway over a tributary from the Mattaponi River.

In response to the closure, drivers are being redirected via a detour that includes Route 629 (Walkerton Landing Road) and Route 633 (Stones Road). The detour spans nearly five miles.

"Drivers are encouraged to use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination," stated VDOT officials. To ensure awareness, message boards have been posted to inform drivers about the road closure.

Based on recent traffic counts by VDOT, approximately 470 vehicles travel daily on Mt. Elba Road.
