Beginning February 17, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will start outside single lane closures on LaSalle Avenue. These closures will affect both directions from North Armistead Avenue to Michigan Drive as part of the ongoing construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment.
Despite the closures, one lane will remain open in each direction and all ramps will stay accessible except for the on-ramp from southbound LaSalle Avenue to I-64 east, which is currently closed. The lane closures are expected to last until fall 2025 to facilitate the replacement of the I-64 overpass at LaSalle Avenue. Access to businesses along this route will be maintained.
Motorists are advised to consider using I-664 as an alternative route to bypass the work area when possible. They are also reminded to exercise caution near work zones by obeying posted speed limits, following lane markings and barrier guides, staying alert to digital message signs, and driving without distractions.
Before traveling, drivers can use VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the 511-integrated Waze GPS app for updated road and travel conditions. VDOT’s website, 511Virginia.org, and mobile app provide information about construction, traffic incidents, congestion, traffic cameras, weather impacts, and more.
The work is part of a larger project covering approximately 11.5 miles on I-64. This segment starts just east of LaSalle Avenue in Hampton and ends 1.2 miles west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. For 10.5 miles between Jefferson Avenue and I-664 exits, existing HOV lanes will be converted into Express Lanes alongside three general-purpose lanes. In the final mile between I-664 and LaSalle Avenue, one general-purpose lane will become an Express Lane in each direction next to two general-purpose lanes.
