While the snow has ceased in Hampton Roads, traces of this week's winter storm linger. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues its 24-hour operations to clear snow and treat roads.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously as temperatures will stay below freezing until tomorrow. This could cause icy conditions on wet spots overnight. It is important to remember that bridges and overpasses freeze before roads, so extra caution is necessary if travel is unavoidable.

Since Wednesday morning, crews have been working in 12-hour shifts to remove snow from roadways, monitor conditions, and spread materials like salt for melting ice and sand for traction on interstates and state-maintained primary routes.

Interstates on both the southside and peninsula are now clear, with additional cleanup ongoing in shoulders, ramps, and gore areas. Operations continue on state-maintained primary and high-volume secondary routes, most of which are in minor condition with isolated patches of snow or ice. As primary routes have been mostly addressed, crews began focusing on low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets this afternoon.

VDOT is responsible for maintaining all interstates, major state primary routes, and county roads in Hampton Roads. This includes over 900 lane miles of interstates and more than 1,800 lane miles of primary roads along with over 7,270 miles of secondary roads. Individual municipalities maintain their own roadways.

For those who must travel, roadway conditions can be checked using VDOT’s free 511 mobile app. The app provides information about road conditions, traffic incidents, construction congestion as well as access to traffic cameras and weather updates.
