The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is actively addressing snowfall and wintry conditions in the Richmond District. Crews are working to manage slick spots and snow accumulation, with additional winter weather expected through the early morning. This precipitation may freeze overnight, prompting crews to remain vigilant.

"Tonight and tomorrow morning could be tricky for drivers," stated Austin Anderson, Richmond District infrastructure manager. He advised motorists to stay home if possible, but those who must drive should exercise extreme caution, assuming wet pavement could be icy due to low air temperatures.

Drivers are urged to be cautious on wet roads and watch for high water or ponding. Cold temperatures may lead to icy conditions overnight, especially on bridges, ramps, and overpasses.

Before commuting in the morning, travelers should check road and traffic conditions at 511.vdot.virginia.gov or via the 511 Virginia mobile app. Conditions can vary along travel routes.

For safe driving during snowy and icy conditions: stay indoors during storms; avoid driving when temperatures are at or below freezing; reduce speed even on treated roads; maintain a safe distance behind other vehicles; do not brake if skidding occurs; allow ample space for snow plows; avoid street parking that obstructs plowing.

Social media updates are available by following @VaDOTRVA and @511centralva on Twitter or visiting VDOT's Facebook page. Road hazards can be reported through VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623).
