The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) temporarily closed the median crossover at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 610 (Woods Cross Road/Davenport Road) in Gloucester County. The closure, initially planned from April 9 to April 11, aimed to protect both drivers and workers while modifying the intersection.

During the closure occupied from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., drivers on Woods Cross Road or Davenport Road were instructed to turn right and utilize existing Route 17 crossovers to continue in their desired direction. Travelers on Route 17 could not make left turns onto Woods Cross Road and Davenport Road during this period.

Construction commenced on this $5.1 million intersection safety project on March 24, with completion anticipated in December 2025. The objective is to enhance safety by altering the traffic pattern. Upon completion, drivers heading from Woods Cross Road or Davenport Road wishing to turn left onto Route 17 will initially turn right and utilize designated U-turn locations approximately 700 feet from the current intersection. Route 17 travelers will be able to make left turns onto both roads, as per the final traffic pattern.

Temporary presence of large, heavy equipment restricted motorist sight distance in the area, necessitating the closure to ensure a safe line of sight for turning vehicles. This work occurred during Gloucester County Public Schools' Spring Break to avoid disruptions to school transportation routes.

The median crossover reopened ahead of schedule. However, during summer 2025, it will close again for ongoing construction, remaining closed until the project's completion.

Moreover, starting April 14, Route 17 will narrow from four travel lanes to two through the work zone for approximately two months. This long-term lane closure will accommodate construction activities safely near live traffic, leading to expected delays through June 2025. Only one lane will be open in each direction near the intersection within the work zone. The crossover, however, will stay open during these long-term lane closures.

VDOT ensures close monitoring of traffic conditions in work zones, adjusting traffic control devices and configurations to ensure the safety of travelers and workers.

"Following April 9-11, the crossover will reopen, and construction crews and equipment will be working in another area within the work zone." "VDOT monitors traffic conditions closely in its work zones. Traffic control devices such as signs, pavement markings, barrels and lane configurations will be adjusted as needed to prioritize the safety of travelers and workers."
