The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the closure of Route 601, also known as Bush Mill Road, in Northumberland County. The road will be closed starting Thursday, February 13, due to snow removal operations and subsequent repairs.
Bush Mill Road will be inaccessible between Route 604 (Hazard Drive) and Route 611 (Gilliams Road) in the Heathsville area. This closure is necessary for crews to repair a box culvert as part of a larger $3.1 million maintenance project aimed at addressing scour in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas. Scour refers to the erosion of soil around the foundation of structures like box culverts or bridges.
To accommodate drivers during this period, VDOT has established a detour route that spans nearly seven miles. Signs will guide motorists through Route 604 (Hazard Drive), Route 201 (Courthouse Road), and Route 611 (Gilliams Road). An online map detailing the detour is available for reference.
Drivers are advised to choose alternate routes based on their destinations. Message boards will be posted on January 29 to inform travelers about the road closure.
The road is expected to reopen by early June, contingent upon weather conditions. According to VDOT's latest traffic count, approximately 300 vehicles use Bush Mill Road daily.
