The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the reconstruction and widening of Route 1, also known as Richmond Highway, is set to commence between Chesterman Avenue and Brinser Street in Richmond. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.
Starting Wednesday, January 29, Route 1 will experience lane reductions with both northbound and southbound traffic reduced to two lanes due to the closure of the right lanes. Additionally, eastbound Hopkins Road and westbound Harwood Street will be reduced to one lane each as part of the ongoing improvements.
Furthermore, starting Tuesday, December 10, a section of Route 1 north at Ingram Avenue will be closed for a stretch of 255 feet eastward from Route 1. Detours have been established for affected routes. Northbound travelers on Route 1 should take Halifax Avenue to Midland Street. For access to Harwood Avenue, drivers are advised to follow the northbound detour.
The project aims to enhance infrastructure along this stretch by realigning Hopkins Road and Harwood Street and installing turn lanes. New water lines, sewer lines, sidewalks, and updated traffic signalization are also included in the planned improvements.
Residents should prepare for potential disruptions in water service during transitions to new water lines and expect short-term construction detours. VDOT assures that residents will receive advance notifications regarding these disruptions.
For further inquiries about the project, individuals can contact VDOT’s customer service center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623).
