The Weekend Preview - Oct. 13, 2022

Men’s Soccer

A first-place showdown highlights the weekend slate on the men’s side as Elon makes the trip to Long Island to face a scorching hot Hofstra team (1 p.m., FloFC). The Pride is 8-0-1 in its last nine contests and has returned to receiving votes in the national polls. Elon earned a draw against another strong opponent last Saturday in William & Mary. The Tribe notched a 2-1 win over Number 10 Wake Forest on Tuesday, running its own unbeaten streak to nine straight games. William & Mary will have a challenging test Saturday from UNCW (7 p.m., FloFC), which enters the weekend third in the CAA standings. Northeastern will visit Charleston in a pivotal game for CAA playoff position (12 p.m., FloFC), while Monmouth visits Drexel (1 p.m., FloFC) and Stony Brook heads to Delaware (7 p.m., FloFC) in games with tournament implications. | Weekend Schedule

Women’s Soccer

Drexel and Northeastern are tied atop the CAA standings with three games to go, while Monmouth is two points behind the leaders. The picture should become a little clearer this weekend as the Dragons and Huskies meet Thursday in Brookline (6 p.m., NESN+/FloFC) before Drexel heads down the shore to face Monmouth on Sunday (1 p.m., NESN+/FloFC). Drexel has lost just one game in all of 2022 and visits a hot Huskies side that has won its last four contests with a resurgent offense, scoring 13 goals in that stretch. Monmouth looks for an opportunity to leapfrog one or both of those teams with a visit from Delaware on Thursday (5 p.m., FloFC) before hosting the Dragons.

Drexel, Monmouth, and Northeastern enter the weekend in the top eight along with UNCW, Elon, Towson, William & Mary, and Stony Brook. The Phoenix, Tigers, and Seawolves all host two games this weekend along with Hofstra, while the Seahawks and Tribe hit the road along with Charleston, Delaware, and Hampton. | Weekend Schedule

Volleyball

The midway point of the CAA Volleyball schedule approaches, and we push on with five conference matches on Saturday and Sunday, all available on FloVolleyball. A pair of first-place teams will hit the road, looking to remain unbeaten, while two HBCUs will face off in a CAA conference contest for the first time in league history.

Elon will host Towson for a rematch of the 2021 CAA Championship match. Last season, the teams split the regular season series before Towson completed a reverse sweep to win its third straight CAA title. The Tigers haven’t lost a step since, as Towson is off to a program-best 18-0 start and one of just two teams in NCAA DI Volleyball without a loss this fall. Meanwhile, Hofstra is off to its best start in conference play since 2006, opening its CAA schedule 8-0. The Pride will take the 620-mile trek to Hanover Hall, where they will look to stay hot against UNCW. In Hampton it will be a historic weekend for the conference as the Pirates will host North Carolina A&T in the first-ever conference matchup between two HBCUs. The former conference rivals will renew pleasantries in the CAA, meeting for the first time since 2017. | Weekend Schedule

Field Hockey

The conference race is heating up in CAA Field Hockey as six teams have collected at least one conference win through the first two weeks of CAA play. This weekend features six CAA matchups, with three apiece on Friday and Sunday. Friday begins with a pair of 1-1 teams going head-to-head as Hofstra entertains Monmouth in a battle of contrasting styles at 3 p.m. (FloLive). The Pride has the league’s top-scoring defense (1.10) and ranks first in the conference in shutouts (4) and goals allowed per game (1.17), while Monmouth is the top-scoring offense (2.10), leading the league in goals scored per game (2.25), points per game (7.08) and assists per game (2.67). Simultaneously, Towson will host Delaware (FloLive) as the Tigers look for their first conference win this fall, and Delaware attempts to win three in a row in conference action. At 4 p.m. (FloLive), No. 25 William & Mary looks to bounce back from a pair of setbacks, visiting the only remaining unbeaten team in CAA play, Northeastern.

Sunday will mark the midway point in the conference schedule and could provide clarity for how the race will play out. Monmouth will remain on the road and visit Northeastern at noon, followed by a pair of 1 p.m. starts between Drexel at Towson and Hofstra entertaining No. 25 William & Mary. There should be plenty of offense between the Hawks and Huskies after a 6-5 overtime contest in non-conference action last year, while the defense will be at a premium when the Tribe and Pride take the turf in a battle of the top two defenses in the CAA this season. | Weekend Schedule

Cross Country

After a low-key past weekend in CAA Cross Country, 11 of 12 teams will be in action this upcoming Friday and Saturday. On Friday, four conference teams – Charleston, Elon, Hampton, and UNCW – will toe the line against one another at the Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina. North Carolina A&T will also be in the Tar Heel state as the Aggies head to High Point for the 2022 Vertcross Challenge. Monmouth and Stony Brook will represent the CAA in the IC4A/ECAC Championships, while Northeastern and Delaware head to University Park for the Penn State National Open. Additionally, the Blue Hens will host the Delaware Invitational on Saturday, where they will be joined by Towson. Last but not least, William & Mary will participate in the Virginia XC23 Invitational to wrap up the weekend.

Swimming & Diving

In the pool, Monmouth makes its season debut at Fairfield on Saturday and William & Mary hosts Johns Hopkins.
