The Virginia Department of Transportation has released its weekly traffic alert for April 6-12, encompassing significant closures across the Hampton Roads District. The schedule includes lane and full closures on various interstates, ramps, bridges, and primary roads to accommodate ongoing maintenance and construction works. All closures are subject to change due to weather conditions and other factors.
Multiple bridges and tunnels, including the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, and James River Bridge, will experience overnight single-lane closures. Elizabeth River Tunnels users can check maintenance schedules directly with the tunnel operator.
On I-64, lane closures will occur on segments undergoing the HRBT Expansion Project and Gap Segment C Widening in James City County, with long-term changes affecting traffic flow. Motorists should also prepare for temporary traffic shifts on I-64, particularly between east of Route 199/Lightfoot and the New Kent/James City County line. Updates can be found on the HRBT Expansion Project website.
The Hampton Roads Express Lanes in both Hampton and Norfolk will see alternating single and double lane closures, with specific off-ramp restrictions in effect during the week. Similarly, long-term shifts and lane reductions will continue in Newport News and Hampton as part of ongoing projects.
I-64 Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes and I-64 HREL in Chesapeake will have intermittent full and lane closures scheduled for various nights. Motorists in Virginia Beach will encounter full off-ramp closures along the I-264 corridor, while Portsmouth travelers will see ramp closures on I-264 west to I-664 north and various ramps at Greenwood Drive.
The closures are intended to facilitate overdue maintenance and expansions, ensuring enhanced road safety and traffic efficiency. Travelers are advised to use alternative routes where possible and check VDOT's 511 resources for real-time updates on traffic conditions.
