Permanent changes to access at Willowmeade Drive and Route 29 will commence on March 13, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. This development is part of the ongoing Route 29 widening project.
The alterations will see Willowmeade Drive become a right-in/right-out access point at Route 29. Drivers will only be able to turn right from southbound Route 29 onto Willowmeade Drive and vice versa. The left-turn lane from northbound Route 29 to Willowmeade Drive will close permanently, and left turns from Willowmeade Drive to northbound Route 29 will no longer be allowed. Alternative routes via Knight Arch Road and Meadow Estates Drive are available for reaching northbound Route 29.
While the left-turn lane from southbound Route 29 to Willow Spring Towing remains open, left turns from Willow Spring Towing back onto southbound Route 29 are now prohibited. Additionally, U-turns from southbound to northbound Route 29 are temporarily banned for the duration of the project, which is expected to conclude in spring 2026.
The widening project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow along with improving accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive. Key improvements include expanding a stretch of road from four lanes to six, correcting vertical alignment for better sight distance, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, and connecting pedestrian/bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange.
