The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is set to hold a "pardon our dust" meeting regarding the ongoing construction project to widen Rolling Road in Springfield. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 19, at Barker Hall, Irving Middle School, located at 8100 Old Keene Mill Road.

The construction involves expanding approximately one and a half miles of Rolling Road (Route 638) from two lanes to four, featuring a raised median, shared-use path, and sidewalk between Viola Street and Kenwood Avenue. This section accommodates around 21,000 vehicles daily.

A presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session with the construction team. The widening project aims to enhance safety and improve traffic flow while increasing accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians. Additional features include constructing a new traffic signal at Rolling Road and Greeley Boulevard, upgrading the signal at Rolling Road and Barnack Drive, as well as implementing access management and stormwater improvements.

Daytime lane closures outside peak travel hours are planned on weekdays along Rolling Road during construction. Pedestrians may encounter temporary closures on existing sidewalks and paths along the road and are advised to follow detour signs as necessary.

This initiative represents the second phase of an $83 million project funded through federal, state (including Revenue Sharing), Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, and local resources. The first phase was completed in 2021 with enhancements made to the intersection of Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644). Phase two is expected to conclude by late 2027.

VDOT advises drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to exercise caution when navigating active work zones. It encourages attentiveness to new traffic patterns while minimizing distractions.

Traffic updates and information on work zones can be accessed online at 511.vdot.virginia.gov, via the free mobile app 511Virginia or by calling 511 within Virginia.
