A new traffic pattern is set to be implemented on Southpoint Parkway in Spotsylvania County. This change aims to enhance safety by reducing vehicle crashes near the Route 1 intersection.
Starting February 24, crews will begin installing concrete median islands. The installation process will require total median closures, along with left turn lane closures at the medians. A message board will inform drivers of these changes.
The concrete medians between Route 1 and Pacific Drive will prevent left turns from commercial entrances and prohibit straight movements across intersections. However, motorists can still turn left into commercial areas from Southpoint Parkway.
This initiative is part of a $16.6 million project that began in March 2023 and is expected to finish by August 2025. Funded by Virginia's SMART SCALE program, the project includes widening the Interstate 95 southbound off-ramp at exit 126 and increasing capacity near Route 1 and Southpoint Parkway. Federal safety funds are also being used to modify traffic patterns between Route 1 and Pacific Drive to reduce collision risks.
Key components of the project include adding a second right turn lane to the I-95 southbound off-ramp, widening Route 1 southbound with an additional travel lane from the off-ramp to Southpoint Parkway, adding a second right turn lane from Route 1 southbound to Southpoint Parkway, restricting through and left-turning traffic out from side streets on Southpoint Parkway while allowing left turns into commercial entrances, and adding an additional right turn lane on Southpoint Parkway approaching Route 1 southbound.
