Snowfall continues to impact the Fredericksburg area, prompting authorities to advise residents to avoid travel overnight and into Wednesday morning. The ongoing storm has left many roads covered with snow, making conditions hazardous.

A wintry mix of snow, freezing rain, and sleet is expected early Wednesday morning, potentially creating icy road surfaces. Authorities recommend staying off the roads until conditions improve.

Currently, Interstate 95 and primary roads in the district are partially covered by snow and slush, while secondary roads remain completely snow-covered. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are actively plowing and treating priority roads to ensure they remain passable for emergency responders.

VDOT's efforts prioritize interstates and primary routes first, followed by major secondary roads that connect to essential facilities or have high traffic volumes. Once these roads are cleared, crews will turn their attention to low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets. VDOT teams are working around the clock in 12-hour shifts during this storm.

Passable road conditions mean an 8- to 10-foot-wide path has been cleared for emergency vehicles, though roads may still be snow-packed without bare pavement. Crews will apply sand on hills, curves, and intersections to improve traction.

More than 1,100 pieces of equipment are being used across the 14-county VDOT Fredericksburg District for plowing and treatment purposes. Over 200 pieces are dedicated specifically to I-95. Tree crews stand ready to address any downed trees due to the weight of snow and ice.

Prior to the storm's arrival, VDOT pre-treated I-95 and primary roads with a brine solution aimed at preventing bonding of snow and ice with pavement.

For current road conditions and traffic updates, visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov or contact VDOT at 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623). Additional resources can be found on VDOT's weather page or through their social media accounts on X and Facebook.
