The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has initiated pretreatment operations in the Richmond District in preparation for expected snow and freezing rain on Tuesday morning. Crews are treating interstates, major, and secondary routes with a salt-water brine solution to delay snow or ice from bonding to the pavement. These mobile operations require brining vehicles to travel at slower speeds, so drivers are advised to give them extra space and treat them as emergency response vehicles.

VDOT emphasizes the importance of being prepared for winter weather driving conditions. Drivers are encouraged to plan their travel around the storm and avoid roads during severe winter weather until conditions improve. This precaution helps reduce crash risks and allows first responders and snowplow drivers necessary operational space.

Motorists should ensure their vehicles are ready for winter by checking brakes, tires, antifreeze, de-icing washer fluid, headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and oil. An emergency winter driving kit with items like jumper cables, an ice scraper, a blanket, a phone charger, and a first aid kit is also recommended.

Travelers should stay informed about road conditions during winter weather events by monitoring forecasts and anticipated travel impacts before heading out. VDOT provides updates through its free mobile 511 app, online at 511.vdot.virginia.gov, or via phone by calling 511 within Virginia.

For inquiries or to report hazardous road conditions, VDOT's 24-hour Customer Service Center can be reached at my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
