In mid-February, a safety project is set to commence on Route 460 at Commerce Drive and Leatherwood Lane in Bluefield. The initiative aims to enhance traffic flow and safety by constructing offset left-turn lanes to improve sight distance at these intersections. Additionally, the project will replace traffic signals and make minor drainage modifications.

Offset turn lanes are designed to increase sight distance by shifting left-turning traffic closer to oncoming vehicles. This adjustment is expected to contribute significantly to road safety in the area.

Motorists should prepare for temporary detours during the construction period. Initially, the intersection of Commerce Drive and Route 460 will be closed, with traffic redirected via Leatherwood Lane and College Avenue. Upon completion of work at Commerce Drive, crews will proceed to Leatherwood Lane, closing that intersection and rerouting traffic through Commerce Drive and College Avenue.

Drivers should also anticipate periodic single lane closures on Route 460 throughout the construction phase.

The contractor responsible for this project is Jones Road and Bridge from Abingdon, Virginia. The contract has been valued at $3.45 million.
