The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the closure of Route 614, also known as Rock Spring Road, in King and Queen County. The road will be closed starting Monday, February 3, to facilitate a culvert repair and bridge replacement project.
Weather permitting, the road is expected to reopen to through traffic by December 2025. Initially, the focus will be on repairing the culvert near Route 616 (Liberty Hall Road), which is anticipated to take around two weeks. During this period, crews will install a new culvert with a diameter of 48 inches and construct new concrete end walls.
Following the completion of the culvert work, another team will begin replacing the bridge over Exol Swamp. This phase is scheduled to start on Thursday, February 13, with an estimated duration of ten months for completion. The new bridge will follow the alignment of the existing structure but will measure 74 feet in length and 27 feet in width. It will feature travel lanes approximately 11 feet wide with shoulders measuring 1.5 feet each.
The current bridge was constructed in 1965 and spans about 51 feet long and 24 feet wide. It has a vehicle weight limit of 15 tons; however, once completed, the new bridge will accommodate vehicles of all legal weights.
Throughout both projects, through traffic will be rerouted via a detour approximately twelve miles long using Rock Spring Road (Route 614), Liberty Hall Road (Route 616), Spring Garden Road (Route 610), Union Hope Road (Route 615), and back onto Rock Spring Road.
Local traffic with destinations along Rock Spring Road can still access driveway entrances during construction. Message boards are set up to inform drivers about closures and detours.
Motorists seeking updates on lane closures or other incidents can refer to VDOT's resource at "511Virginia."
