WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement applauding $1,481,489,572.87 in broadband investments that are headed to Virginia through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, which was made possible by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that Kaine helped pass:

“I’m in Winchester today to hear all about telehealth services have become an essential tool in helping health providers keep our communities healthy. High-quality, reliable broadband also plays a crucial role in helping Virginians access work and educational opportunities and stay in touch with loved ones,” said Kaine. “I’m proud to have helped pass the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that made today’s investments possible, and will continue to do all that I can to ensure that every Virginian has access to the tools they need to thrive—including broadband.”

The BEAD Program provides resources to expand high-speed internet access by funding planning, infrastructure deployment and adoption programs. Today’s investment will allow the Virginia Telecommunication Initiative to expand broadband service to unserved and underserved communities.

Kaine has long supported expanding broadband service in Virginia. Last year, Kaine announced that $5 million in resources from the first phase of BEAD funding was allocated to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to help develop plans for deploying future funding from the program.
