Delaware men’s lacrosse, one of the hottest teams in the country stayed hot, earning an impressive wire-to-wire win over Robert Morris in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday night. Delaware scored a season-high 20 goals while holding the Colonials to single digits, winning 20-8.
The Blue Hens improve to 12-5 with their sixth straight victory and advance to face second-seeded Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. (ESPNU) on Sunday in Washington D.C. Robert Morris finishes its season 10-6 after the setback in the first round.
Delaware netted the opening goal and never looked back as Tye Kurtz picked up where he left off in the CAA Championship, scoring the first tally one minute and 39 seconds into the game. The goal sparked a 10-1 over the opening 27:15 of the first half.
The Blue Hens took a 10-2 lead into the half, with Kurtz and JP Ward accounting for five of Delaware’s first-half goals, including Ward’s eighth hat trick this spring.
Delaware didn’t slow down after halftime, with Mike Robinson scoring the first of three goals to begin the second half. The Blue Hens outscored Robert Morris 5-2 in the quarter, extending their lead to 15-4.
After scoring the last two goals in the third, Delaware rallied off the first four in the final quarter as the 6-0 run pushed the Blue Hen advantage to 19-4, putting the game all but out of reach.
Ward paced Delaware with seven points on five goals and two assists, while Robinson added six points, recording his ninth hat trick this season with three helpers. Kurtz was the third Blue Hen to tally a hat trick, recording his fifth straight, in addition to one assist for a total of four points.
The Blue Hens went 20-for-32 at the face-off X while outshooting the Colonials 51-30 in the contest, including a 33-17 advantage in shots on goal.
