Colonial Athletic Association issued the following announcement on March 9
Delaware’s Jasmine Dickey was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women’s basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Drexel’s Amy Mallon was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year by her peers, while Claudia Soriano of Northeastern was chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Year, Charleston’s Arynn Eady earned CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Towson’s Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was pegged as the CAA Sixth Player of the Year. Additionally, Drexel’s Keishana Washington was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Delaware’s Lizzie Oleary was the recipient of the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
Dickey becomes the first back-to-back CAA Player of the Year since former Blue Hen Elena Delle Donne won the honors in 2012 and 2013. The senior guard/forward ranks third in the NCAA averaging 25.0 points per game and is third in the CAA collecting 9.7 rebounds per game. She has recorded 15 double-doubles this season and made an impact defensively, averaging 1.0 block and 1.9 steals per game. Dickey is the only player in the NCAA this season to record a 40 plus and 50 plus point performance highlighted by her 52 points and 18 rebounds on February 4.
After winning the CAA Tournament in her first season, Mallon’s sequel has lived up to the hype. Mallon led Drexel to a CAA regular-season title, going 16-2 in conference play. Under her leadership, the Dragons have posted a 24-4 record overall, which included a 13-game winning streak. The 24 wins are tied for the most in program history prior to the conference tournament. It marks the third time over the past five seasons Drexel has collected CAA Coach of the Year accolades. Denise Dillon earned the honors following the 2018 and 2020 seasons.
Soriano becomes the first CAA Rookie of the Year in Northeastern program history after making an instant impact on the court for the Huskies this season. A native of Barcelona, Spain the freshman guard was Northeastern’s second-leading scorer, averaging 11.7 points per game. She led the team in assists averaging 3.9 per game and grabbed 3.4 rebounds per contest. Her offensive contributions cannot overlook her defensive prowess as Soriano led the CAA with 3.2 steals per game this season, good enough to rank seventh in the NCAA.
Eady led the CAA with 2.1 blocks per game and ranked sixth in the conference with 2.1 steals per game. The senior forward was the only player in the league to average more than 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per contest throughout the season. Eady’s 61 blocks were over 20 more than the next closest person as she ranks 27th nationally in total blocks. Additionally, she grabbed 9.2 rebounds per game to rank fourth in the CAA. Eady is the second Cougar to collect CAA Defensive Player of the Year accolades and the first since Bre Bolden won the honors three years in a row from 2015-17.
Kornegay-Lucas is the first Towson CAA Sixth Player of the Year honoree. Since her addition to Towson’s rotation during conference play, Kornegay-Lucas has provided key production for the Tigers off the bench. The redshirt sophomore does a little bit of everything for the Tigers, averaging 8.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Earlier this season Korneygay-Lucas became the first CAA player since 2018 to record a triple-double, with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists on February 9.
Washington received CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her impressive performance in the classroom and on the basketball court. The senior has accumulated a 3.69 grade point average while majoring in Psychology. She has made the Dean’s List on four occasions and has been a member of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll six semesters during her undergrad. On the court, Washington ranks second in the CAA averaging 19.4 points per game and has reached double figures in all 28 games this season.
Oleary was the Dean Ehlers Award recipient, which is presented annually to the women’s basketball student-athlete who “embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with her academic athletic achievement.” Oleary completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Merchandising with a 3.38 grade point average and is in pursuit of her Master’s Degree in International Business. She is a two-time team captain and SAAC representative for the Delaware women’s basketball program in addition to maintaining leadership roles in multiple student-athlete run organizations on campus. In 2021, her service efforts within the community were recognized, earning Delaware’s Volunteer Community Service Award. Oleary has been a staple in the Delaware program over the past five seasons, appearing in 143 games for the Blue Hens and making 77 starts.
Dickey and Washington were joined on the All-CAA first team by Delaware redshirt senior forward Ty Battle, Northeastern senior guard Kendall Currence and Towson junior guard Aleah Nelson.
Battle led the CAA in rebounding and double-doubles. Her 11.4 rebounds per game rank 12th nationally, and she is sixth in the NCAA with 20 double-doubles. Currrence was among the top 10 in the conference in scoring (16.0 ppg/7th) and reached double figures in 21 of her 26 contests. Nelson leads the CAA and ranks 12th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.60). She ranks third in the league, with 5.4 assists per game, and is fourth in points per game (16.8).
The individuals named to the All-CAA second team were Charleston junior guard Jenna Annechiarico, Drexel graduate forward Tessa Brugler, James Madison junior guard Kiki Jefferson, Drexel firth-year guard Hannah Nihill and Elon senior guard Brie Perpignan.
The third-team All-CAA honorees include William & Mary graduate guard Riley Casey, Charleston senior forward Arynn Eady, Hofstra redshirt senior forward Jaylen Hines, Towson sophomore forward Allie Kubek, and William & Mary redshirt senior guard Sydney Wagner.
