Colonial Athletic Association issued the following announcement on Feb 12.
Saturday’s Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball action saw the three teams at the top of the CAA standings – UNCW, Towson, and Hofstra – help their positioning for top seeds in Washington, D.C., in March, while Drexel and James Madison were victorious in a 4-1 day for home teams.
UNCW 85, Charleston 79 | Box Score
UNCW built a 14-point second half lead and held off Charleston in the closing minutes to move to 11-2 in the CAA. The Seahawks opened a 66-52 advantage with 12:52 to play before a 14-2 Cougars run narrowed the margin to two. Charleston would get back within two once more, but the visitors were unable to fully complete the comeback. Jaylen Sims led UNCW with 27 points and James Baker Jr. added 23. John Meeks led Charleston with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Drexel 67, Northeastern 51 | Box Score
Xavier Bell scored a game-high 22 points and Drexel took care of the ball, as the Dragons limited themselves to six turnovers in a CAA win in Philadelphia. Drexel never trailed in the contest, building an advantage as large as 21 early in the second half. Melik Martin added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals for Drexel, which improved to 6-5 in the CAA with its third win in its last four tries. Drexel’s Camren Wynter recorded seven assists to pass Drexel’s Frantz Massenat and Hofstra’s Desure Buie for ninth in CAA history. Chris Doherty led Northeastern with 17 points and 15 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year.
Hofstra 80, Delaware 66 | Box Score
Aaron Estrada recorded his 11th game of 20 or more points in 13 CAA contests with a 21-point night that led all scorers and improved Hofstra to 9-4 in CAA play. Hofstra built a 15-point lead midway through the second half, Delaware would answer with a 13-5 run to get within 67-60, but the Pride responded with a 7-0 stretch to put the game away. Hofstra’s Jalen Ray and Delaware’s Ryan Allen both moved into a tie for ninth in CAA history in made threes. Jyare Davis led Delaware with 16 points.
James Madison 69, William & Mary 55 | Box Score
James Madison earned a season sweep of William & Mary by shooting 49% in a victory in Harrisonburg. Vado Morse scored a game-high 15 points and Justin Amadi added 13 in a balanced attack for the Dukes, who benefitted from eight assists from Tyree Ihenancho. Julian Lewis and Ben Wight led William & Mary with 13 points each; Wight added 10 rebounds. The Dukes led by as many as 24 points in the second half before W&M pulled closer down the stretch.
Towson 86, Elon 50 | Box Score
Towson shot 58% and saw 13 players find the scoring column in the Tigers’ largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent in 30 years. Charles Thompson was 9-for-11 on his way to a game-high 20 points as Towson recorded its most convincing victory since a 122-58 win over Buffalo on March 7, 1992. Towson benefitted from a 26-0 run that spanned both halves, including the final 19 points before halftime, to improve to 10-3 in the CAA.
