A segment of Route 640, also known as Model Road, in Rockingham County is set for temporary closure starting April 14 as the Virginia Department of Transportation undertakes a bridge replacement project. The section between Route 980 (Honeysuckle Road) and Route 639 (Nicholson Road) will remain closed for a little over two weeks to facilitate the replacement of an existing bridge with a box culvert.

Ahead of the closure, motorists on Route 640 should expect controlled traffic managed by flaggers during daylight on April 9 and 10. Once closed, traffic will be rerouted through specified detours:

- Westbound drivers from McGaheysville are advised to turn left onto Route 980, proceed right onto Route 981 (Rockingham Pike), then onto Route 33 (Spotswood Trail), and finally right onto Route 639 to resume on Route 640.

- Eastbound drivers from Elkton should turn right onto Route 639, followed by left turns onto Route 33, Route 981, and Route 980 to return to Route 640.

If weather permits, Route 640 is expected to reopen by April 30.
