The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of planned road closures and lane restrictions in the Hampton Roads area from March 23 to March 29, 2025. These closures are part of ongoing maintenance and construction projects aimed at improving infrastructure across the region.

Significant single-lane closures will occur on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64), with eastbound lanes affected on March 24 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) will experience northbound single-lane closures from March 23 to March 25 starting as early as 8 p.m., and southbound lanes will be closed on March 26-27 during nighttime hours.

The James River Bridge (Route 17) will have mobile, alternating single-lane closures in both directions on specific dates, while the George P. Coleman Bridge will see similar patterns on March 24. In addition, the Berkley Bridge (I-264) will undergo lane restrictions eastbound on March 23 and westbound on March 24.

Motorists are advised to consult Elizabeth River Tunnels for updates on Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164) maintenance schedules.

For those traveling through James City County, there will be alternating single-lane closures along I-64's Gap Segment C Widening project from Route 199/Lightfoot to Ropers Church Road throughout the week. On-ramp closures at Croaker Road and Old Stage Road are also scheduled.

Further lane restrictions are expected as part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) projects in Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Suffolk areas. Notable full off-ramp closures include I-64 east to Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road in Hampton and I-264 east in Virginia Beach.

The public is encouraged to visit VDOT's website or use their smartphone app for real-time updates regarding these roadworks. "Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors," VDOT noted.

For additional information about specific project impacts or traffic shifts related to long-term construction efforts like HRBT Expansion Project or HREL initiatives, motorists should refer to detailed alerts available online.
