With a busy weekend of racing events at Martinsville Speedway from March 28 to March 30, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is advising drivers to prepare for increased traffic in the area. The department encourages fans attending the NASCAR race on Sunday, March 30, to adhere to recommended traffic patterns displayed on signs and message boards.
VDOT will deploy numerous signs and changeable message boards across the region to assist travelers. Both vehicular and pedestrian traffic are expected to be heavy. Traffic will be directed in specific patterns around the speedway to minimize congestion. Drivers should note that the speed limit will gradually decrease from 65 mph to 35 mph on the Route 220/Route 58 Bypass as they approach the venue.
For those traveling south from Roanoke and areas north of Martinsville, it is advised to continue on Route 220/Route 58 Bypass past the speedway interchange and turn right onto an access road leading into the speedway. This entrance is located one mile east of the Route 220 interchange and may offer easier access. Signs will indicate this entrance.
Motorists coming from Danville and areas east of Martinsville should follow signs directing them to use the track’s back gate, which is accessible off the bypass east of the track.
Drivers approaching from Greensboro and areas south of Martinsville are advised to pay attention to electronic message boards and follow police instructions to use the right lane.
Those coming from Stuart and areas west of Martinsville should remain on Route 58 east and follow posted signs and message boards toward the track.
Race attendees are encouraged to arrive early, closely follow directional information, and anticipate heavy traffic with potential delays throughout the area.
