Governor Glenn Youngkin has instructed the Virginia State Police to initiate a criminal investigation into claims of school-funded abortions in Fairfax County. This action follows a report that alleges school staff facilitated abortions for minors without parental consent.
“I am deeply concerned with the allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools officials arranged for minors to get abortions without parental consent and may have misused public funds to pay for them. I am directing the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to open a full criminal investigation into the matter immediately,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin.
The reports suggest that school officials might have organized and financed abortions for several minors without notifying their parents. It is also alleged that the school administration was aware of these actions, potentially using local, state, and federal funds.
The allegations stem from letters, audio recordings, and handwritten statements provided to conservative journalist Walter Curt, who first reported on the matter according to the Free Beacon. Fairfax County Public Schools has denied the report’s accuracy but confirmed it has launched “an immediate and comprehensive investigation” into these claims.
Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid described such actions as “unacceptable,” though current policy does not mandate staff to inform parents when a student inquires about abortion, according to ABC7News. Reports indicate involvement of multiple students, including a 17-year-old at Centreville High School, with school administrators potentially aware of the arrangements.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, two former Centreville High School students claim that in 2021, Fairfax County Public Schools staff arranged and paid for their abortions without parental consent, violating Virginia’s parental-notification law. One student reported that school social worker Carolina Díaz scheduled her abortion at the Fairfax Healthcare Center and covered the cost. Another student was allegedly told she had “no other choice” but to terminate her pregnancy while five months pregnant. Both allege Principal Chad Lehman was aware of the procedures and that taxpayer funds were used.
