Old Dominion University head coach Chris Finwood said on May 3 that his team stayed resilient and delivered key hits late in the game to secure a 5-4 walk-off victory against Arkansas State. The Monarchs’ Scotty Young drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, marking his second walk-off hit of the week.
The win is significant for Old Dominion as it marks their fourth walk-off victory in three weeks, showing their ability to perform under pressure. The team now holds a record of 24-23 overall and 11-13 in Sun Belt play.
“It was a good game. We hung in there and finally got a couple of big hits in the eighth and ninth innings. The bullpen did a really good job for us today, especially with Kellen Davis not able to go,” said ODU head coach Chris Finwood.
The Red Wolves took an early lead, but Old Dominion responded with timely hitting throughout the game. In addition to Young’s performance, Will Johnson and Brody Connors each had two hits, while several other players contributed runs or runs batted in. Maddox Jack earned the win after pitching effectively in relief during the top of the ninth inning.
Finwood praised Young’s efforts saying, “Two walk-off hits in week for Scotty. Really happy for him. We needed that one and the guys found a way to get the win.” Old Dominion outhit Arkansas State nine to five and improved its all-time series record against them to four wins and two losses.
Looking ahead, Old Dominion will host Richmond for their third meeting this season on Tuesday at 6 p.m., aiming to continue their recent momentum.
