York County will host a household chemical collection, computer recycling, and paper shredding event on May 9 from 8:00 a.m. to noon, according to an announcement released on April 14.
The event is part of the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority’s (VPPSA) annual schedule, which includes fifteen such collections for residents in Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County, and York County. These events are intended to help residents safely dispose of common household chemicals and electronic items while also providing secure document shredding services.
Residents may bring paints, fuels, solvents, pesticides, automotive products, and other typical home maintenance or cleaning chemicals for disposal. The collection will also accept computers—including desktops and laptops—servers, monitors, cell phones, computer wiring, desktop printers (including multifunction models), fax machines, as well as desktop photocopiers and scanners. Televisions will not be accepted at this event.
A shredding truck will be available for citizens who wish to securely dispose of personal paperwork. Each participant can bring up to five boxes of documents for shredding; staples and paperclips do not need to be removed beforehand. However, binders or any items containing large metal parts such as three-ring notebooks or accordion files cannot be included with materials for shredding.
Upon arrival at the site on May 9th in York County, a VPPSA employee will ask participants about their city or county of residence as well as the materials they are bringing; proof of residency may be required. Staff members will unload vehicles while participants remain inside unless otherwise instructed.
Further information regarding acceptable materials can be found by visiting VPPSA.org.
