Another winter storm is expected to hit western Virginia, starting on Wednesday, February 18. Residents should keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan their travel accordingly as the storm could bring several inches of snow, affecting both morning and evening commutes.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews and contractors have begun pretreating interstates and main roads. VDOT advises drivers to avoid brine trucks and not attempt to pass them.

According to VDOT, “the first priority in any winter weather event are the interstates and primary roads (those numbered 1-599) and high-volume secondary routes.” Equipment operators will focus on these major routes before addressing low-volume secondary roads, neighborhood streets, and unpaved roads once the precipitation has stopped.

Post-storm temperatures are predicted to be at or below freezing. This may result in packed-down or frozen snow remaining on some roads, potentially slowing down melting.

The Salem District encompasses Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke counties.
