Winter weather is expected to affect drivers in the Culpeper region this afternoon, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The agency has warned that ongoing snowfall, reduced visibility, and below-freezing temperatures could create hazardous conditions on roads through the evening.
VDOT stated that crews are fully mobilized and working continuously, including overnight shifts. All available personnel and contractors are engaged in plowing and treating roads as weather conditions change across the district. Drivers should be especially cautious on bridges, ramps, and mountain passes, which are likely to freeze before other road surfaces.
“If travel is not essential, the safest option is to delay or avoid driving until conditions improve. Reduced traffic volumes allow VDOT crews to clear and treat roadways more safely and efficiently,” VDOT said in a statement.
For those who must travel, VDOT urges motorists to reduce speed, increase following distance, watch for snowplows and equipment, use extra caution on areas prone to early freezing such as bridges and ramps, and check real-time road conditions before leaving. Updates specific to Culpeper District can be found on X.com/VaDOTCulp and the district’s Facebook page.
