Willowmeade Drive in Fairfax is scheduled for closure from April 9 to April 12 for continued installation of a water main as part of the ongoing Route 29 widening project. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced, weather permitting, the road will be closed from 7 a.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Access to properties along Willowmeade Drive will be available during the 72-hour closure. However, the drive will be completely inaccessible from Route 29 to just south of the driveway for the property located at 5105 Willowmeade Drive.

Traffic will be redirected via a detour that includes Route 29, Meadow Estates Drive, and Knight Arch Road back to Willowmeade Drive, and drivers are urged to follow the posted signs accordingly.

The Route 29 project aims to provide enhancements along the stretch between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive. According to VDOT, these improvements are intended “to improve safety, traffic flow and bicyclist and pedestrian accessibility and connectivity.” Specific upgrades involve reconstructing and widening 1.5 miles of roadway from four lanes to six, correcting vertical alignment to enhance sight distance, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, and improving connectivity to trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
