William & Mary lost a close game against George Mason on May 5, falling 15-14 at Plumeri Park. The Tribe, now with a record of 20-26, overcame an early six-run deficit by scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning but could not hold on for the win.
The game saw William & Mary respond quickly after trailing 6-0. Matthew Kosuda and Chase Ecker hit RBI singles before Kevin Francella tied the score with a two-run double. Witt Scafidi then drove in two more runs with a single, and Kosuda singled again to add another run. Charlie Iriotakis capped off the inning with an RBI double as William & Mary led 12-6.
George Mason came back by scoring three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to take a one-run lead. In the fifth inning, Scafidi doubled to bring home Jamie Laskofski and tie the game at 13-13. However, George Mason added two more runs in the sixth inning to regain control.
Scafidi had another key moment when he doubled again in the seventh inning, allowing Sam Kaczmarek to score and make it a one-run game. In their final chance during the ninth inning, Laskofski walked but was left stranded at first base.
Noah Hertzler pitched effectively out of William & Mary’s bullpen for nearly three innings without giving up any runs or walks while striking out two batters. Hank Lippman threw a scoreless ninth inning for William & Mary as well. Carter Kelsey earned the win for George Mason while Diego Cardenas picked up a save; Jack Weight took the loss for William & Mary.
Statistically, William & Mary finished with thirteen hits during this high-scoring contest. Scafidi went three-for-six at bat and drove in four runs; Kosuda, Ecker, and Anthony Greco each had multiple hits; Laskofski stole two bases and scored twice; and defensively, William & Mary turned three double plays.
Looking ahead, William & Mary will begin its home Colonial Athletic Association series against Towson on Friday evening.
