The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Fredericksburg District, covering August 17 to 23, 2025. The alert outlines upcoming lane closures, maintenance activities, and ongoing construction projects across multiple counties.

On Interstate 95, drivers should expect single lane closures at various bridges between Exit 118 (Thornburg) and Exit 126 (Spotsylvania) from Monday to Thursday nights for routine safety inspections. Inspections will take place at the Matta River bridges, Massaponax Church Road overpass, and Spotsylvania Parkway overpass. At Exit 130 (Route 3), crews will inspect the Cowan Boulevard overpass nightly through Friday.

Paving operations on I-95 northbound are scheduled between Exit 126 and Exit 130 from Sunday through Thursday nights. Police will direct traffic during these alternating lane closures. Additional paving work is planned between Exits 140 and 143, as well as Exits 143 and 148 during overnight hours.

Southbound I-95 will see similar paving activities between Exit 130 and Exit 126, along with milling and paving between Exit 140 and Exit 136. Police will be present to manage traffic flow.

In Caroline County, Route 2 will have one-way alternating traffic weekdays for milling and paving between Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) and the Spotsylvania County line. Route 207 northbound bridge rehabilitation continues near the Mattaponi River, reducing lanes near Nelson Hill Road; completion is expected by April 2026. On Route 301, alternating lane closures are scheduled for milling and paving.

Fredericksburg city drivers should anticipate right lane closures on southbound Route 1 at Wellford Street due to an intersection improvement project. Geotechnical work is set for Route 2 (Dixon Street), while Fall Hill Avenue will have a right turn lane closure at Route 1.

Bridge washing operations are scheduled in Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, Northumberland, Richmond, Westmoreland counties as part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance efforts.

Other notable projects include:
– In Essex County: Cheaneys Bridge Road over Dragon Run Creek remains closed until May 2026 for bridge replacement.
– In Gloucester County: A $5.1 million safety project is underway at the intersection of Route 17 and Woods Cross Road/Davenport Road; completion is set for December 2025.
– In Mathews County: A $3.5 million rehabilitation project continues on the Route 14 bridge over North End Branch with expected completion in June 2026.
– In Northumberland/Westmoreland counties: Gardy’s Mill Road remains closed due to a dam breach; travelers are advised to use posted detours.
– In Spotsylvania County: Multiple improvements are ongoing including widening of Route 1 near I-95 exit 126 with projected completion in September 2027; Harrison Road is being reconstructed with expanded lanes and pedestrian upgrades expected by late summer 2026.

Commuters can access ridesharing information through GWRideConnect—a free service provided by the George Washington Regional Commission—for travel options within the Fredericksburg area.

“Travelers should use caution in all work zones,” VDOT advises. “Obey direction from flaggers or law enforcement officials.” According to VDOT’s statement: “Real-time information on work zones and congestion can be found on www.511virginia.org.”

VDOT reminds motorists that most overnight construction takes place outside peak travel times to reduce disruption.
