A new 1.6-mile roadway, known as the Waynesboro Southern Corridor, has opened to vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the City of Waynesboro. The corridor is a two-lane road with a shared-use path that runs roughly parallel to Interstate 64 between exit 94 (Rosser Avenue) and exit 96 (South Delphine Avenue).
The project extends Shenandoah Village Drive along Coyner Springs Park and intersects Lyndhurst Road across from North Oak Lane. From there, it follows North Oak Lane over the South River before continuing through Nature’s Crossing Technology Center, an industrial park within the city. The corridor includes a signalized crossing at the Norfolk Southern Railway and concludes at a new intersection with South Delphine Avenue.
Officials state that the new roadway will help improve traffic flow around I-64 exits 94 and 96 while providing better access to industrial, commercial and residential areas in Waynesboro. It will also function as the main access road for Nature’s Crossing Technology Center.
“The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) in June 2016 selected the Waynesboro Southern Corridor for full funding through the SMART SCALE prioritization process, which objectively scores transportation projects using several data-driven measures,” according to information released by VDOT.
In 2023, Branch Civil Inc. of Roanoke was awarded a $9,985,000 construction contract for this project with an expected completion date of September 22, 2025.
Waynesboro is located along the I-81 corridor in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and is recognized for its manufacturing sector as well as being a regional retail center. Nature’s Crossing Technology Center spans approximately 170 acres and offers multiple rail-served sites for manufacturers.
