The VMI track and field teams will participate in the 2026 Virginia Challenge, hosted by the University of Virginia on April 17 and 18 at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville. The competition follows a successful showing at the JMU Invite last week.
The event is significant for VMI as it offers athletes another chance to compete against strong Division I programs from major conferences. Junior Morgan Fraser will open the meet for VMI in the high jump on Friday afternoon, while Reagan Gilman is scheduled to run in the 800 meter invitational later that evening. Gilman recently broke her own school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.50, surpassing her previous mark set as a freshman.
Several other cadet-athletes are set to compete on Saturday across various events, including hurdles, sprints, relays, and pole vault. The schedule includes Shea Hart and JeNiya White in the women’s 100 meter hurdles; SeMore Green in the 200 meters; Cameron Thomas in pole vault; Rye Jackson in the 400 meters; Naturale Faison in the women’s 200 meter invitational; and both women’s relay teams.
VMI Director of Track and Field Zack Scott said, “We’re looking forward to the Virginia Challenge and the opportunity to compete against a strong field. This weekend is about execution, confidence and continuing to build momentum as we get closer to championship season.” He added, “It gives our team another great opportunity to compete at a high level and keep moving forward. We want to see this group compete with confidence, trust their preparation and continue building momentum this weekend.”
As championship season approaches, VMI aims to use this meet as preparation for upcoming major competitions.
