The VMI men’s track and field team began competition at the John Weaver Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, on April 24. The team posted several notable results on the first day of the meet.
The event marks an important opportunity for athletes to compete against regional opponents and set personal records as the outdoor season progresses.
Junior Cameron Thomas achieved the team’s top finish of the day by placing second in the pole vault with a height of 4.87 meters. Teammates Tyrus James and Jesse Vaughn followed in fourth and fifth place, clearing heights of 3.82 meters and 3.67 meters respectively.
In other events, Vahin Middough secured fourth place in the high jump at 1.85 meters, while senior Isaiah Blount finished fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 44.88 meters. Freshman Grayson Talbott took seventh place in javelin at 40.54 meters.
Sophomore Camden Gonzales recorded a new personal record by finishing sixth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:14.70, closely followed by Timothy Renquist (seventh, 10:16) and Colin Crenshaw (eighth, 10:26). In field events, Tazewell Rae placed tenth in hammer throw with a distance of 41.33 meters.
The Keydets are scheduled to continue competing on Saturday during the second day of action at the John Weaver Invitational.
