VMI Baseball defeated Longwood 3-0 at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium on April 28, ending a six-game losing streak. The Keydets now have a record of 27-17 overall and 3-9 in the Southern Conference, while Longwood stands at 26-19 and 8-7 in the Big South.
The win marks VMI’s fifth shutout of the season and their first since March. With this victory, VMI has reached at least 27 wins for three consecutive seasons, tying for the fifth most single-season wins in program history.
Owen Prince became VMI’s all-time leader in stolen bases with his 101st career steal and extended his streak of reaching base safely to a school-record 44 games. Cole Raile continued his strong performance by extending his hitting streak to nine games and hitting his team-leading thirteenth home run. Pitchers Clark Driscoll, Hunter Sipe, and Tyler Bassett combined for an effective outing; Driscoll struck out six batters over four innings, Sipe earned his fifth win of the year, and Bassett secured his first save.
Other notable performances included Bradley Garner collecting two hits with a double, Grayson Fitzwater drawing two walks to bring his season total to forty-four—fourth most in a single season at VMI—and Benjamin Cardone adding two walks as well. The scoring began in the fourth inning when Raile hit a two-run home run. In the seventh inning, Prince drove in another run with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Looking ahead, VMI will return to conference play this weekend with an away series against UNC Greensboro.
