Virginia women’s tennis defeats Saint Francis to reach NCAA second round

The Virginia women’s tennis team won 4-0 against Saint Francis on May 2 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship. The match took place at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort.

This result allows Virginia, ranked No. 7 in both tournament seeding and ITA team rankings, to move forward in the championship. The Cavaliers will next face No. 22 Washington at home on Sunday, May 3, with free admission for spectators.

Melodie Collard and Vivian Yang started strong for Virginia with a 6-0 win in doubles, followed by Annabelle Xu and Martina Genis Salas securing another doubles victory. In singles play, Genis Salas posted a decisive win before Collard extended the lead further. Kaitlyn Rolls clinched the overall victory with her own straight-set win.

According to match notes provided by the team, this is only the second meeting between Virginia and Saint Francis, with Virginia holding a perfect record against them. Collard and Yang now have a season record of 19-7 as a doubles pair while Genis Salas and Xu have achieved their seventh consecutive completed match win together on court two.

The upcoming match will be available via Cracked Racquets CrossCourt Cast on YouTube as well as individual court streams on VirginiaSports.com. Live scoring will also be provided for fans following from afar. The winner of this regional matchup will go on to compete against the winner from Baton Rouge Regional.
