The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field program announced on May 21 that 34 athletes have qualified for the NCAA First Round, which will be held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington from May 27 to May 30.

This qualification gives Virginia’s team an opportunity to compete for spots at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships scheduled for June in Eugene, Oregon. The event brings together top collegiate athletes from across the region, with each competitor aiming to place among the top twelve in their respective events to advance.

The announcement lists qualifiers from both men’s and women’s teams across a range of events. On the men’s side, notable entries include Sam Rodman (800m), Gary Martin (1500m and 5000m), Will Anthony (10,000m), Nathan Mountain (3000m steeplechase), Jeremiah Nubbe (hammer throw), Nikolaos Polychroniou (hammer throw), and others. For the women, Tatum David leads entries in the 1500m alongside teammates Tatum Olesen, Cate DeSousa, and Stella Kermes; Gillian Bushee is entered in both the 5000m and 10,000m; Charlotta Sandkulla headlines hammer throw qualifiers; while additional representation comes from Maya Rollins (100m hurdles) and Christiana Ellina (javelin).

According to event procedures outlined by organizers, “the top twelve competitors from each individual event and the top twelve teams from each relay event advance from the east and west first round.” The list of qualifiers advancing will be released on Sunday, May 31 with final championship participants confirmed on Tuesday, June 2.

Looking ahead, Virginia’s focus remains on securing as many qualifying spots as possible for nationals. “The Cavaliers set their sights on the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene,” according to program officials.
