Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced on April 30 the addition of James Green, a four-time All-American and former University of Nebraska standout, as assistant coach for the Hokies.

The hiring brings Green back to Blacksburg, where he previously trained with the Southeast Regional Training Center from 2020 to 2022. He will join Robie and the coaching staff ahead of the 2026-2027 season.

Green recently returned to competition after a brief retirement due to injury. In his time away from competing, he served as USA Wrestling’s National Freestyle Development Coach in Colorado Springs. Since resuming training in 2023, Green has made his seventh world team and is set to compete for another spot at Final X in Newark on June 19.

During his coaching tenure at Nebraska, Green helped guide wrestlers Ridge Lovett and Antrell Taylor to national finals appearances and individual titles. His efforts contributed to Nebraska achieving consecutive top-three finishes at the national tournament in both 2025 and 2026.

As an athlete, Green was a Big Ten champion in 2014 and became only the second four-time All-American in Husker history. He represented Team USA at multiple World Championships between 2015-2021 and again in 2024, earning bronze in 2015 and silver in 2017.

“James has gained valuable experience and built meaningful relationships through his roles as Developmental Coach with USA Wrestling and assistant coach at the University of Nebraska. We’re thrilled to welcome James, his wife Chandell, and their two daughters, Glory and Aubrey, back to the Virginia Tech Wrestling family,” Robie said.
