Virginia Tech’s softball team lost to Liberty University 10-9 on April 22 at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies, ranked No. 13/16, attempted a comeback in the seventh inning but were unable to overcome a six-run deficit.

The matchup was significant as it saw Virginia Tech outhit its opponent for the 42nd time this season and tally double-digit hits for the 28th time. Despite these achievements, the Hokies allowed ten or more runs for the first time all year.

The game began with both teams scoring one run each in the first inning. Liberty then scored five runs in the third inning, putting pressure on Virginia Tech. Annika Rohs scored on a wild pitch to reduce the gap, and Nora Abromavage hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. However, Liberty extended their lead with additional runs in later innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and runners on base, Zoe Yaeger delivered a two-RBI single followed by Michelle Chatfield’s triple that brought more runs home. Rachel Castine then hit her tenth home run of the season to make it a one-run game before Virginia Tech’s final out ended their rally attempt.

Other notable performances included Jordan Lynch going three-for-three at bat with a walk and Avery Layton recording her seventh win of the season as pitcher. Eight different Hokies contributed to twelve total hits during this high-scoring contest.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will host North Carolina from April 24-26 for their final home Atlantic Coast Conference series of the year.
