Virginia Tech defeated Syracuse 12-1 in the opening game of their series on May 1. The win came after a strong offensive showing from Virginia Tech, who recorded two three-run home runs and collected a total of 11 hits.

The game saw Virginia Tech score early, with two runs in the first inning and another three in the second, including Jordan Lynch’s 16th home run of the season. In the third inning, Addison Foster hit a double to bring in two more runs. Rachel Castine added to the lead with her own three-run home run in the fourth inning, marking her 12th homer this year.

Michelle Chatfield contributed with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning. Pitchers Bree Carrico and Avery Layton combined for five strikeouts while allowing only three hits over five innings.

According to game notes provided by Virginia Tech, this victory marks their 17th run-rule win of the season and their record-breaking 20th sacrifice fly for a single season. The team has also surpassed 500 hits for the year and is nine away from setting a new single-season record. Lynch’s home run ties her for most on the team alongside Nora Abromavage.

Virginia Tech now holds an all-time record of 18-16 against Syracuse and has outhit opponents in most games played this season. Seven out of twelve RBIs during this match were achieved with two outs.

The teams will meet again on Saturday at Syracuse University at 1 p.m., with coverage available on ACC Network Extra.
