The Virginia Tech baseball team lost to NC State, 14-7, at English Field on April 25 after a series of weather delays interrupted Saturday’s game. The Hokies held several early leads but could not keep pace with the Wolfpack’s offense in the later innings.
The outcome matters for both teams as they continue their Atlantic Coast Conference campaigns. Virginia Tech dropped to a record of 21-20 overall and 10-13 in conference play, while NC State improved to 27-15 and reached an even mark in ACC games.
Junior infielder Ethan Gibson led the Hokies by going two-for-five with two doubles and two runs batted in. Hudson Lutterman hit a solo home run that tied the game at seven during the fifth inning, and Sam Gates collected his second consecutive multi-hit game. Despite holding NC State to just three hits in Friday’s opener, Virginia Tech gave up fifteen hits on Saturday as four Wolfpack starters combined for ten hits, nine runs scored, two home runs, and five RBIs.
Gibson extended his hitting streak to twelve games by doubling early in the first inning. He later scored on a rundown play initiated by Henry Cooke’s walk. The Hokies briefly led after scoring four runs in the second inning—including an RBI double from Pete Daniel and a squeeze bunt single from Gates—but NC State quickly answered with three runs of their own.
After another lead change brought about by Owen Petrich’s RBI single for Virginia Tech, lightning forced a lengthy delay midway through the eighth inning with NC State ahead by one run. When play resumed nearly two hours later, Virginia Tech’s bullpen allowed six more runs before Nixon capped off scoring for NC State with a solo home run in the ninth.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will attempt to win its next conference matchup against NC State on Sunday at English Field.
